Sugarpuffish Adventures in Madrid, Spain
Did you miss me? Did you even notice I was gone? I spent last week soaking up the sun in Madrid and I did not want to come home. I love Spain and the sunshine so I had a wonderful time taking in the sights. Madrid has a split personality, laid back attitude during the day and a lively party side in the evenings. It’s a typical Spanish city with narrow streets and plazas which I could happily wander around for hours, ducking in and out of the sunshine, sitting in cafes eating Tapas and sipping Sangria. If you seek peace and quiet, head into one of the local parks to escape traffic and shelter from the sun. Who can resist the simple pleasure of sitting on a bench and watching the world go by? Alternatively, a gentle stroll leads to boating lakes, fountains and elegant gardens.

Once we found our feet the first stop was the Museo del Prado which houses the oldest and greatest art collection in the world. When we paid for our guide book we were not expecting to be handed a rather large and weighty text book (there is a picture on my instagram). I half expected to sit an exam on exiting the building. The museum is a labyrinth of corridors with master pieces at every turn. You can easily spend a day or two in this museum and still not see it all. If modern and contemporary art is more your thing, then visit the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and gaze upon several pieces by Picasso (after 7pm entry is free).

During our stay we also visited The Royal Palace (Palacio Real). As you would expect, the interior is a flamboyant display of wealth with opulent decorations and furniture. The Palace is only used for ceremonial purposes and the Royal Family reside elsewhere in Madrid .

Sugarpuffish Adventures in Madrid, Spain 2

We took a trip on the cable car which takes you from Parque del Oeste over the Manzanares river to a cafe in the middle of Casa de Campo. It was a lovely way to get away from the city and view Madrid from a different angle. The restaurant was reminiscent of those found in a theme park but it was lovely to sit outside and admire the views. If you can muster up the energy, Casa de Campo is a large park with jogging tracks, mountain bike trails, picnic areas and a lake.

Another memorable place we came across was Mercado de San Miguel, an indoor market. Housed in an elegant wrought-iron building it was a pleasure to wander around. There were plenty of snacks to tempt your taste buds from oysters, wine, olives, meats, chocolates, pies and much more.

We had a lovely time and Madrid offered something different to Barcelona, Seville and Granada, which I have previously visited. I spent time vlogging our trip and created a series of videos for my YouTube channel (click here). There will be four in total, I'm still uploading and editing as I type this post.

Introduction - Skin & Tonic London

Skin & Tonic London
I have my eye on a new skincare range from Skin & Tonic London. I adore the ethos of the brand "Our products only use a MAXIMUM of 7 simple, organic and local or Fair Trade." The story behind the creation of this brand is a familiar one. Sarah was diagnosed with endometriosis and this triggered a desire to simplify her lifestyle and pay attention to what goes into her body and on her skin. She started to formulate her own natural and synthetic free skincare to fit her needs.

The product line is not huge but covers the basics for a good routine - Steam Clean, Brit Beauty Oil, Gentle Scrub, Lip Balms, Calm Balm and for the gents, Beard Oil.

I am instantly drawn to Calm Balm, a multifunctional product which contains my favourite ingredients, Roman Chamomile, English Lavender and Welsh Calendula. It is suggested this balm can be use for hydrating dry skin, massaging into muscles, applying to wrists and temples to calm your mood and aid sleep.

You can buy products direct from Skin & Tonic's website and they recently launched at Content Beauty.

Madrid, Spain - The Food We Ate

Sugarpuffish Madrid Food
I know many of you will be curious how I managed food restrictions on my recent travels. As I don’t have life threatening allergies it makes matters a little easier. I have visited Spain many times so I’m reasonably familiar with the dishes on offer and would happily eat veggie Paella until I burst. Spain is a meat and cheese loving country but visiting a big city like Madrid guarantees a wide variety of cuisines along with vegetarian/vegan restaurants. The biggest problem we faced was deciding where to eat because there was a restaurant or takeaway on every street.

Before I left home I had bookmarked a blog post by Vegan Mos which gave detailed information on Vegan restaurants. We visited Restaurante Vegetariano which was a lovely place hidden down a side street away from the main crowds. The Staff were friendly and we ordered Hummus topped with tomato and pita bread, mixed salad and Gyoza. The food was delicious but we felt slightly on the expensive side. Next up we tried Yerbabuena which was highly rated by VeganMos but we were disappointed. The restaurant was tiny, lacked atmosphere and the food was average. I could not understand why they felt the need to put soya chunks in vegetable paella.

After our failed meal I decided to cut loose and stop seeking out Vegetarian/Vegan restaurants (my boyfriend is a meat eater so I have to take him into consideration). Our next stop was the most adorable Sushi restaurant I did ever see. Miss Sushi was pink, girlie with soft and comfortable furnishings. The menu was extensive with clearly marked Vegetarian and Vegan options. I ate a plateful of vegan sushi and returned to the hotel with a happy belly.

Sugarpuffish Madrid Food 2

No holiday would be complete without ice cream and Mr Sugarpuffish found Giuseppe Ricci. They only offered one soya option but I really did not care it was limited. I had chocolate on my first visit and the next time they had changed over to vanilla. Both flavours were delicious and I was extremely happy to indulge. On the topic of soya, yoghurts were readily available in the supermarket, in a wide variety of flavours so that became an easy breakfast option (we opted out of breakfast at the hotel to cut costs).

One of our lunch time stops was Naturbier at Plaza Santa Ana. Like many of the cafes in Madrid, it wasn’t anything fancy but offered simple Spanish dishes. We ordered Calamares and Patatas Bravas. On our last day, we ate lunch at La Casa del Pulpo (near Plaza Mayor) and I finally got the Vegetable Paella my belly had desired from the moment I stepped foot in Madrid.

Finally, I cannot forget to mention our visit to Chocolateria San Gines. It’s an old cafe (est. 1894) which only serves chocolate con churros (thick hot chocolate with deep fried batter hoops). Of course, I could not par take in this Spanish tradition so Mr Sugarpuffish sacrificed himself and offered to indulge on my behalf.

As you can tell, I managed my food restrictions fairly easily and it certainly was not any harder than my daily life at home.

Bath Time Fun with Quintessentially English & Chilly B

Chilly B Lavender Lullaby Luxury Bath Soak
I am not a bath person, it stems from my childhood years of missing out on Mr Matey and having to bathe in paraffin eczema treatments. Recently, I have been trying to take some “me time” and relax in the tub. I’m still not completely swayed but I have enjoyed the excuse to buy bath products.

I placed an order with Chilly B and they kindly included Lavender Lullaby Luxury Bath Soak. This soak is a combination of Dead Sea and Himalayan salts with added Shea and Cocoa butter. The butters give a luxurious feel and after bathing my skin feels silky but not greasy. These salts also contains lavender petals which I think makes a pretty addition to your bathing experience. I love the packaging for its cute and pretty labels. The bath salts are available in screw top bottles or clip top jars.

Quintessentially English Lavender Fields Bath Bomb

I purchased a Quintessentially English Lavender Fields Bath Bomb from Adore Naturals. The ingredients are simple - Water (Aqua), Bicarbonate of soda, Citric acid, Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool. The subtle lavender scent was the only minor disappointment. I find lavender a comforting fragrance and would have preferred a bit more of it.

I enjoyed bathing in the tub with both products and did not experience irritation or noticeable dryness to my skin. I definitely suggest adding both Quintessentially English bath bombs and Chilly B Luxury Bath Soak to your wish list and with Christmas (yes I dared to mention it in September!) approaching they would make lovely stocking fillers

Dr Bronner's Organic Lavender Hand Sanitizing Spray

Dr Bronner's Organic Lavender Hand Sanitizing Spray
Dr Bronner's castile soap has been a staple part of my routine for a long time. I have recently started to branch out and explore some of their other products. When I travel, I like to carry with me a hand sanitiser. Normally I favour wipes but this time I decided to buy Dr Bronner’s Lavender Hand Sanitizing Spray because it comes recommended by my blogger pal, Rachel (All Natural Aspirations).

Pardon the pun but I found this sanitiser spray very handy. I am not a fan of public toilets, you are guaranteed a lack of hand soap and loo roll. A hand sanitiser obviously does not compensate for properly washing your hands but at least it gives peace of mind in these awkward situations. I was concerned the spray may dry out my skin but I did not notice any problems. It's mildly moisturising probably from the glycerine (Ingredients: 62% Organic Ethanol, Water, Organic Glycerin and Organic Lavender Oil). I am a huge fan of lavender so I love the fragrance. I also ended up using the spray as an air freshener and bedtime sleep aid. When travelling with cabin allowance it is nice when you can make a product multifunctional.

I think Dr Bronner's Lavender Hand Sanitizing Spray is a great product for a good price (£2.99). It would be lovely to see it available in more fragrances because I know not every one is keen on Lavender.

Have you tried this product?

Sugarpuffish - To Review or Not To Review - #bloggerproblems
To a small company a popular review post can be of enormous value. It's one of the reasons I am selective about who I support. I accept samples in good faith. I do not take lightly the decision to publish my thoughts and opinions. When working with brands, I endeavour to keep communication open and usually provide private feedback or ask questions before a blog post goes live.

A few weeks ago I responded to a request for bloggers with eczema to review a balm. I knew the company and I had brought products from them in the past so I was more than happy to volunteer. As I sat down to write my review, I remembered I needed to query the ingredients label. I emailed and enquired if the lack of INCI (ingredient only stated in English) was an oversight or did I have outdated packaging (I had agreed to accept a sample that failed quality control). I also did not recall this problem when I purchased one of their other products.

I was surprised by the response, in their opinion the label was compliant (they had received legal advice). I directed them to the Cosmetic Products (Safety) Regulations 2008. The next email received proudly informed me that they had done their own research and referenced that the July 2013 regulations (EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009) do not stipulate INCI so they are not in the wrong over the labels. I am not surprised by the conclusion made, as they referred me to an unofficial website. However, if you research thoroughly, you will discover statements that the requirement for INCI remains unchanged. (In April I wrote a blog post on the regulations click here)

At the point where you get told "I thought getting a free sample would be beneficial to you, this has perhaps not being the case.”I am willing to throw in the towel. I would rather concentrate my time on brands that are not afraid of feedback be it good or bad.

This company expects a review but I have been put in an awkward position. The frustrating part is the dilemma between supporting this company (as they do have good products) and fighting the nagging feeling that I can’t recommend a brand failing to meet regulations. Giving this company a recommendation is a disservice to all the brilliant brands I have work with who I know are diligent about regulations. The other sticking point is purely personal. I don't want to feel the wrath of an angry company because I have to be truthful in a review and they clearly disagree with me. I have gone there in the past and whilst my readers are hugely supportive and commend me for it, I'm the one that has to manage the furious emails.

This experience has highlighted to me that there are major flaws in how the cosmetic regulations are managed and enforced. Can the fact that a company is small and laws are complex really be an excuse for getting this wrong? I do sympathise to an extent but with the internet at our finger tips we can unravel most things. All my knowledge comes from asking people in the industry, reading books and the internet. I also want to highlight that if a company can't get labelling correct what other elements of the regulations are they failing to comply with? Are they keeping batch records or registering their products with the CPNP?

I feel the need to stress to other bloggers that cosmetic regulations are important. I’ve been informed that some don't care about lack of INCI. I understand where this derives from because English is easiest to understand, but the bottom line is regulations are in place for consumer safety. Consider this, you choose a product, you are happy it's suitable for your needs and then you mysteriously react to it. You just placed a huge amount of faith in that product because of the information provided on the packaging. INCI labelling, expiry dates and listing allergens protect the consumer and company alike.

I want UK bloggers, especially those of you who use natural skincare, to be more aware of the whole picture when reviewing products. Natural and Organic skincare is on the rise, we want it to continue that way and in order to get it on the shelves of big stores, companies must get regulations right.

Schmidt's Natural Deodorant

Schmidt's Natural Deodorant

This has been the hardest post to write because Schmidt's natural deodorant has been getting a lot of positive attention in the Green Beauty Community. After seeing Chesca’s review (Fern & Moss) I decided to order a couple of travel sizes. I went for Lavender & Sage and Bergamot & Lime. My experience of natural deodorants is limited and this is the first time I have tried a solid “paste” rather than a liquid roll on.

The main ingredients in Schmidt are shea butter, baking soda, arrowroot and cocoa butter. Some people do report sensitivity to baking soda so I was a little concerned. I experienced very mild irritation but nothing of great significance. It could simply be from the action of rubbing the product onto my skin as I do find it is a little “gritty”. The scents are delightful and the Bergamot & Lime took me by surprise. I was not sure if it would suit my taste but I’m hooked and will look out for this combination in other products.

Unfortunately, I find the application of this product infuriating but I am the first to admit I have very little patience. You need to scrape the deodorant out of the jar and collect the shavings into the palm of your hand. At this stage I usually ended up with half of it on the carpet. I was given the tip to roll into a ball (Thanks Naturally Paula) which does work as the product becomes tacky with warmth, you can then rub onto your skin.

Once I tackled application next up was the stink test. I managed half a day at work and started to notice a little personal whiff, bearing in mind I have an office job and spend nine hours sat at my desk, I was disappointed. I don’t regard myself as a stinky person and sweat is only a problem when it's a hot summer day so I was a little shocked when I noticed I started to smell like Stig of the Dump. Okay joking aside, I probably was the only one picking up on my odour but it plays on your mind and I did become self conscious. The Bergamot & Lime failed me quicker than the Lavender & Sage so I guess my body chemistry is reacting to the essential oils.

Now I know from past experience it is not unusual to have to re-apply natural deodorant because they are not antiperspirants. However I have to be honest, between the annoying application technique and needing to strip semi naked in the loo at work, I cannot be bothered with the hassle and conventional roll-ons involve less drama.

I am sorry Schmidt’s I really did want to be part of your fan club. I certainly don’t want to put people off completely. There are many very positive reviews out there but I needed to share an alternative perspective on this one. Have you tried Schmidt's deodorant? What are your views on this product, good or bad?

Pure Chimp Super Soap - 100% Natural Goodness

Pure Chimp Super Soap

I volunteered to test Pure Chimp Super Soap. I pretty much feel in love with the scent before I'd unwrapped it. Oh boy, this smells freaking awesome, I adore the banana. It makes me smile every time I reach for the soap dish. Don't panic you won't be smelling like Banana Man all day long. I find this soap leaves a mild scent on the skin and it doesn't last long but enough to lift my spirits for a few minutes.

The ingredients are a pure as you can get, not a single one you can't pronounce and each of them offering skin nourishing benefits. The soap is on the soft side, I was able to break it in half without a struggle. The only downside to this is ensuring you have a draining soap dish because the soap can become very mushy if left in a puddle of water. Super Soap doesn't produce lots of lather but remember bubbles are fun but they don't clean your skin.

Pure Chimp Super Soap 2

Pure Chimp is a quirky little brand with honest, simple and Vegan ingredients. I would suggest that the product line could be beneficial for those with sensitive skin and/or eczema. All ingredients are visible on the website so that makes life a little easier if you have allergies. I consider prices to be affordable, Super Soap costs £3.95. A sample service is also provided.

Have you tried Pure Chimp Super Soap or any of their other products?

Amy's Kitchen Chinese Noodles & Veggies and Breakfast Sandwich

Amy's Kitchen Chinese Noodles & Veggies and Breakfast Sandwich
Before you all shout at me for eating ready meals, I don't live on them, they simply provide an occasional convenient solution for lazy evenings. I am a big fan of Amy's Kitchen because they offer Vegan products which provide me with a safe alternative to take away meals. Over the past few years more of their products have been creeping into the supermarkets. It does depend where you shop as stores are favouring the gluten free and cheese filled products rather than Vegan ones. The good news is Tesco have started stocking Chinese Noodles & Veggies and Breakfast Sandwich, both are Vegan.

Lets start with the Chinese Noodles & Veggies dish. I love the taste of this one, it has a creamy cashew sauce and is packed fully of vegetables. We all know ready meals never look as glamorous in real life compared to the picture on the box but I think this one is pretty good. It comes out of the microwave looking edible. I have already bought this meal again to stash in the freezer for emergencies.

On the other hand, The Breakfast Sandwich is a disappointment.  I enjoyed the meatless sausage and tofu scramble but the bun was a gluten free disaster. It has a strange texture, goes hard in places (I heated exactly as per instructions) and is far too sweet for my taste buds. I also feel at £2.49 you don't get much bang for your buck. The breakfast bun is a little on the small size but perhaps I am just greedy?

I do have one complaint to direct at Tesco. They have removed my much loved Amy's Kitchen Red Thai Curry which really peeves me off. I don't understand why it could not remain alongside the two new options.

Do you buy Amy's Kitchen? Do you have a favourite meal/snack from their range of products?

Chilly B Mint & Rosemary Restoring Foot Butter

Chilly B Mint & Rosemary Restoring Foot Butter
I am preparing my feet for winter. My dry skin battles during cold weather are never ending so I want a head start before the frost and snow arrives. I mentioned in my September Favourites that I had purchased Chilly B Mint & Rosemary Restoring Foot Butter. It has been working out great for me so I wanted to share a review with my readers.

As the name suggests this is a rich butter packed with fabulous ingredients which should help keep tooties smelling fresh and feeling soft. Ingredients: Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, Vitamin E, Peppermint, Vanilla, Rosemary, Eucalyptus. This is definitely a product that needs applying in the evening before heading off to the land of nod. I often will treat myself and recreate a spa pedicure by simply adding bath salts into a bowl, soaking my feet and then apply a generous layer of foot butter. This extra attention makes all the difference for me and hopefully I'll survive winter without my feet snagging my tights and socks (oh yes I went there).

Chilly B products are handmade in Dorset and free from undesirable ingredients. I think prices are affordable, the foot butter will last you a long time and costs £7.50 (50ml jar). I think it's fair to say that Chilly B is fast becoming one of my favourite brands.

If you looking for other recommendations, check out my recent Chilly B bath soak review click here.

Introduction - TOTM 100% organic cotton sanitary products

TOTM organic cotton sanitary products

Lets chat about a topic which often we only speak about in hushed tones, Periods. I have blogged about my lady problems before and mentioned I wanted to learn more about having an eco-friendly period. Most Green Bloggers will promote menstrual cups as a replacement for tampons but I am turning my attention to pads and liners, as those are the products I prefer using.

I recently was approached by TOTM (Time of the Month) they offer 100% organic cotton sanitary products (pads & tampons). TOTM products are free from cellulose pulp, perfume, viscose, rayon, chlorine, dioxin and 95% biodegradable. I have received samples. I won’t be reviewing right away but I wanted to bring TOTM to everyone’s attention.

A little research into familiar brands of tampons and pads reveals some thought provoking facts about the ingredients and materials in these products. I have always been concerned about the environmental impact on landfills but recently started to wonder if my problem periods could be linked to toxic ingredients. I have noticed a trend for fragranced sanitary pads and that's not ideal for sensitive skin and allergies. It drives me crazy that manufacturers feel my natural bodily functions are so repulsive that I need to scent them with air freshener. Do I really need my underwear to like smell alpine fresh?

TOTM offer a subscription service via their website. You can receive monthly deliveries of the products you need, on a date chosen by you. Alternatively, you can purchase through Feel Unique. Packaging is sleek and discreet which makes a pleasant changed from all the lurid floral designs. Are love heart supposed to make my period more enjoyable? When Aunty Flow visits next month, I will update you on how I got on with the pads. Until then, do check out TOTM’S website for further information.

Have you switched to eco-friendly feminine products?

Living Nature Nourishing Body Wash

Living Nature Nourishing Body Wash

I have dipped in and out of Living Nature products over the years. Living Nature’s website goes into great details about their commitment to using safe ingredients and respecting environmental issues. It’s a New Zealand company which uses 100% natural ingredients, preservatives and fragrances, and certified natural by BDIH Germany. Packaging is recyclable, free from BPA, Phthalates, dioxin and elemental chlorine. Living Nature do not test on animals, they do use some animal products (beeswax, honey and lactose) but promise they are “obtained using industry best-practice methods”.

I have been using Living Nature Nourishing Body Wash* which claims to “cleanse, moisturise & soften all over”. The standout ingredients in this wash are manuka honey, ginger, kelp and shea butter. For me, the fragrance is mainly from ginger, which gives it an unusual twist on the floral scents I tend to favour. I do have one criticism with Living Nature products, they list Parfum in the ingredients but do asterisk that it is from “natural essential oils”. Companies are allowed to do this but it’s a pet peeve of mine because we don’t get full disclosure of all ingredients in the product.

This Living Nature body wash produces creamy foam when used in conjunction with a shower puff. For your reference, the foaming agents are Decyl glucoside and Sodium lauroyl glutamate. I would agree that it does live up to the claim to moisturise and soften as I have not noticed any dryness or tightness after showering.

Overall, this is a pleasant body wash which does the job and if you are looking for something with a luxurious feel then this could be the one for you. Living Nature products are available from botanicalbrands.com

My Dairy Free Dream - Almond Dream Non Dairy Ice Cream

Almond Dream Non Dairy Ice Cream

I can not remember who was chirping loudest on Twitter but the news that Almond Dream Non Dairy Ice Cream had launched into Waitrose caused quite a frenzy. I had to beg Waitrose social media team for a store list and whooped with delight that several stores within my reach were stockists.

You are probably thinking what's the fuss about. For me it's all about the flavours. Mint chocolate chip was a childhood favourite pre-allergy diagnosis. As much as I love Swedish Glace (I will certainly not be abandoning it) I wanted, hell I needed, mint choc chip back in my life.

Almond Dream Non Dairy Ice Cream Praline Crunch
Almond Dream ice cream has slowly been arriving into stores (full store list is on my Facebook page (link) post dated 6th October). The flavours available are Salted Caramel, Praline Crunch, Velvety Vanilla and Mint Chocolate Chip. They are free from dairy and gluten and suitable for vegetarians and vegans. At the moment the introductory price is £3.74 a tub.

The luxury dairy free ice cream market has suddenly become competitive with Coyo, Jollyum, Bessant & Drury (Coconut Collabrative) and Booja Booja. My verdict is I think Almond Dream is wonderful. I brought three flavours, I passed up Vanilla because it's not very exciting to me. I am really enjoying the tub and spoon experience. Each flavour is creamy and tasty. I will say that the Praline Crunch is very similar to Jollyum Maple & Pecan. Normal dairy ice cream is a long distant memory but I can tell there is an after taste which gives a hint of almonds. It's not a criticism, just worth noting.

So what are you waiting for? Run now as fast as you can to the nearest Waitrose. Perhaps you are already with spoon and tub in hand, what do you think? Are you enjoying Almond Dream non dairy ice cream?

Warning - this dairy free crazy person can be seen wandering the supermarket searching for ice cream, approach with caution!

Back in March (link), I wrote a post about Global Natural & Organic brands I discovered on Etsy. Fast forward to the present and I spent another lunch break snooping around and here are the gems that caught my eye.

I think we can all see why I was drawn to Frecklefarm Organics. The super cute designed packaging is a winner but the product range also looks divine.

With products like Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Body Scrub and Spiced Vanilla Glaze Massage Oil, Herb & Root makes me hungry for dessert.

With Herbivore Botanicals, I like the look of the modern and minimalist packaging. Katie of katievibes.com informs me that their Blue Clay soap is one of her favourites.

I don't wish to bombard this post with lots of pictures but can I also suggest checking out - ELUCXMetta SkincareGinger ChiCoast & Clearing

Blue Labelle Biologique Chamomile & Avocado Cleansing oil

Blue Labelle Biologique Chamomile & Avocado Cleansing oil

You all know my favourite cleansing oil is from Blue Labelle (the dry/sensitive skin formula). I have lost count of how many times I have bought it but one thing I do know is it is a staple product in my beauty cabinet. Blue Labelle recently launched the Biologique range, a line of oils which are 100% Organics and includes Supercritical CO2 extracts of Amaranth, Sea Buckthorn & Chamomile as well as cold-pressed (raw) oils of Marula, Moringa, Red Raspberry Seed & Argan. I have been testing the *Chamomile and Avocado Cleansing oil.

You are probably wondering what is Supercritical CO2 extract (I know I was). It is a method of extraction which produces superior plant oil that has not been altered by heat associated with steam distillation.

"The CO2 extraction process consists of pumping pressurized carbon dioxide into a chamber filled with plant matter. When carbon dioxide is subjected to pressure it becomes "supercritical" and has liquid properties while remaining in a gaseous state. Because of the liquid properties of the gas, the CO2 functions as a solvent, pulling the oils and other substances such as pigment and resin from the plant matter. Thus, the difference between CO2, or supercritical, extraction and traditional distillation is that CO2 is used as a solvent instead of heated water or steam. The temperature involved in the supercritical extraction process is around 95 to 100 degrees F as opposed to 140 to 212 degrees F in steam distillation." (source - edenbotanicals.com)

The Chamomile and Avocado cleansing oil contains sweet almond, caster oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, amaranth (CO2 extract) Chamomile (CO2 extract), geranium oil, palmarosa and rosemary (CO2 extract). For me, it is a lovely blend and a pleasure to use. All the ingredients offer great benefits to my skin. If I compare the Biologique to my old faithful from Blue Labelle’s original range, there is not a significant difference in terms of performance. Both contain ingredients that do not disrupt my skin and without putting the product under some sort of laboratory testing, to the naked eye there is not a dramatic difference.

Overall, I like the Biologique cleansing oil but I am also very happy with the original formula (review link). I feel that the decision of which range to purchase from would be purely based on personal preference. The Biologique does contain a higher quality of essential oils because of the extraction technique and is 100% organic. I imagine that is a selling point which will be embraced by some customers. I highly recommend Blue Labelle products, which ever product you buy, I do not think you would be disappointed.

Debunking Skincare Myths - Does our skin absorb 60% of skincare?

Science is not my strength. Unfortunately, that does mean I must remember to not take everything on board as the gospel truth. In the past, I have been guilty of sharing articles claiming that 60% of the cosmetics we put on our skin ends up in the bloodstream. The concern is synthetic and toxic ingredients are entering our bodies and causing ill health. Only the other day, I saw a natural company using this same statement to market their skincare. They are by no means the only ones using this statistic. At the start of my green journey, I naively trusted that the people sharing this fact had done their homework but the more I learn, the wiser I become to those spreading "half truths".

I highly recommend everyone reads the following excellent articles. Both explain why the statement about our bodies absorbing 60% is somewhat flawed.

These articles explain that our skin is made up of layers (epidermis, dermis and hypodermis) so there is a distance which an ingredient must travel before reaching the bloodstream. Not every ingredient will be absorbed. It is dependent on the "chemical" and the size of the molecules as to whether it will pass through. I am guessing this is why hormone and nicotine patches work. These are treatments which are specifically designed to be absorbed. If an ingredient does make it into the body, some will naturally pass through our system as we are designed to reject what is not needed. What we must remember is when it comes to skincare we are looking to treat the top layer of skin so cosmetics are not deliberately manufactured to penetrate all the way to our bloodstream.

Whilst I am looking at this topic, I wanted to once again highlight the issue of gluten and food allergens in skincare. It is widely debated whether there is a need for gluten free cosmetics/skincare. I certainly understand the demand for them, my sister is coeliac. Of course, I have my own allergies and do not use any skincare that contains milk and citrus. I understand the concern for allergens in lipstick but should I really be concerned about them in body lotion? I have read that gluten molecules are too large to penetrate through to the bloodstream and a reaction to a product containing gluten is more likely to be down to other ingredients in the formula. There was a case in Australia of a woman who used goat milk soap and went on to suffer a severe allergic reaction when she ate goat cheese. The reaction did not happen overnight, she started using the soaps to treat eczema in 2009 and reacted in 2011. It is also worth remembering that eczema can cause broken skin and the skin layers are not as robust as they are meant to be. I am guessing eczema would leave you vulnerable to ingredients penetrating into the bloodstream. It was an unusual case but it certainly gets you thinking.

Our daily lives are filled with undesirable synthetic ingredients which are not needed. That is why I advocate natural and organic skincare. I am not entirely dismissing the idea that some ingredients appear to be making it into our bodies but I am saying that some scary facts floating around on the internet are not always accurate. It is unlikely we are are absorbing 60% of what we put on our skin.

Green Beauty Blogger Meet Up (Reading, October 2014)

Remember the Field Trip Tour of July? Once that was over, Rachel (All Natural Aspirations) decided we needed another gathering and set the wheels in motion for a meet up in Reading. The plan was lunch, shopping and lots of chatting about beauty and learning more about each other. Somewhere along the line Jen (Jen's Green Skincare) and I were roped in to help put together a goody bag for the day. We pooled our contacts and honestly expected to get told to go away but the support we received was overwhelming. We under estimated the generosity and so yes we went slightly overboard and perhaps ended up with the biggest bag ever seen in blogger history, oops! :D

Sugarpuffish Green Beauty Blogger Meet Up (Reading, October 2014)

I'd like to personally thank all the brands we contacted between the three of us. I specifically reached out to my favourites as I wanted to give the other ladies a chance to try brands that I personally love. A huge thank you to -

The goody bags were organised in secret which was great fun and wonderful to see everyone's reactions. I think it's fair to say that Bodhi & Birch stole the show on the day. I did capture the moment on camera but since my footage is identical to Rachel's I'm unsure whether to bored everyone with uploading it.
