Balm Balm Organic Chamomile Floral Water - Soothing Baby Mist

I have been using Balm Balm Organic Chamomile Floral Water for months and it some how slipped my mind to write a review. I love Balm Balm products because they are organic, have simple ingredients and affordable prices.

The website blurb for this floral water is - "Mist over sore, inflamed or itchy skin; rashes; cracked nipples or any areas that need a little soothing. Also perfect for spritzing over bed linen to induce sleepiness. Suitable for use from newborn but a ‘must-have’ for grown ups too."

For those of you not aware, a floral water is the by product of steam distillation of essential oils. They will have similar properties to essential oils but they are less concentrated. Floral water is a good product to have in your beauty cabinet as it has a number of uses. As I find chamomile works well with my sensitive skin, this suits me as a facial toner or for spritzing liberally when my skin is feeling delicate. Chamomile has a pungent earthy scent which may not be to everyone's taste.

Balm Balm have four floral waters (including chamomile) in their range so you can chose according to personal taste or skin type. Products can be purchased direct from their website but are also stocked on many of the popular natural and organic online stores. I paid £11 for this 100ml bottle.

Have you tried Balm Balm products? Do you like to use a Floral Water?

Getting eczema off my chest

Sugarpuffish Eczema

When a Doctor passes comment that your eczema isn't severe and almost implies that you should stop moaning, it's not easy to take that on the chin. I had terrible eczema as a child. The kind that cracks, bleeds and weeps every time you move. I don't suffer to that extent any more. I am very much aware that my eczema isn't severe. Some may say I am lucky but I certainly don't feel it. Why am I made to feel like I can't cry about my eczema? Surely it does not matter how much or how little your body is affected, eczema is still eczema, it carries the same woes and feelings.

For several years I have been experiencing eczema on my chest. Right there on my lady bumps and sometimes it slowly creeps towards my belly button. I am also experiencing redness under my eyes and shoulders. My eczema is fickle, it comes and goes. It can be mild one day and nasty the next. Eczema anywhere on the body knocks your confidence but I hate that my body decided to chose my boobs. It doesn't make me feel sexy. I hate having bra fittings even after all these years I feel like people are worried they may catch my "disease". I find myself rambling to shop assistants that I have eczema and I am sorry she has to see it. I am mortified when I try on black clothing and it looks like I have dandruff. Sometimes it doesn't matter how much moisturiser you apply it is never enough.

I dread the winter months. No one likes dark nights and cold weather but for me I have to face my kryptonite. Hibernating does you no favors because if the weather doesn't get you the central heating will. Your handbag is suddenly over flowing with moisturisers, hand and body creams so you can maintain dignity at work because come lunch time you'll have crocodile skin.

I am stubborn with my skin. I won't resort to prescriptions. I am anti-steroids. My own experience teaches me that these treatments solve my problems in the short term but the long term damage is irreparable. I believe in natural remedies. I see positive results but they are not miracle “cures” and take time to work. I have a routine. I carefully chose ingredients and rotate my products to accommodate how fickle my skin appears to have become.

I am writing this blog post after suffering a raging skin flare up. My skin is itchy, sore, inflamed and looks like I have a burn. I have narrowed this episode down to three possible triggers. For me eczema is a grieving process. You cry at the pain, you feel sorry for yourself, you bury your head into a bucket of ice cream (dairy free of course!) and then you decide to tackle it head on. You formulate a master plan determined that this time you will see the back of it.

I am certainly not looking for sympathy or advice. I just want to moan. I want people to understand how shit it is to have eczema. I am telling you, my readers, that even though I write about fantastic products, I am still (at times) looking for my magic “cure”.

Opulentia Organics Peppermint & Avocado Lip Balm

Opulentia Organics Peppermint & Avocado Lip Balm

I previously featured Opulentia Organics back in 2013 when I reviewed their body oils (review link). They have just launched three lip balms and I have had the pleasure of testing out Peppermint & Avocado* (also available in Lavender & Oat and Rose Geranium & Rosehip.

I choose Peppermint & Avocado for the simple reason that I like a minty fresh taste and avocado is a fabulous ingredient in skincare (and my sandwiches!). These lip balms arrive in a cute little paper bag and the tin is perfect for slipping into your pocket. With a blend of cocoa butter and coconut oil it is the perfect addition to your winter skincare routine. You will have smooth and soft lips in no time and without the fear of ingesting questionable ingredients.

Ingredients Peppermint & Avocado - *theobroma cacao seed butter (cocoa butter), *cocos nucifera seed butter (coconut butter), *ricinus communis seed oil (castor oil), *cera alba (beeswax), *persea gratissima oil (avocado oil), *mentha piperita oil (peppermint oil), naturally occurring in essential oils: *d-limonene, *citronellol, *linalol, *eugenol

Opulentia Organics lip balm would make the perfect stocking filler this Christmas.

Eco Friendly Christmas Gift Ideas 2014

Sugarpuffish Eco Friendly Christmas Gift Ideas 2014

I love researching for my Christmas Gift Guides (this year I have planned 3 posts) but my favourite is the Eco Friendly theme. It's really great to find unique products which are made from recycled and upcycled materials. I also look for items which support charities or fairtrade programs. I mention it every year but you really can find some hidden gems from around the world on Etsy plus Folksy and Not On The High Street are good for supporting UK sellers.

Girl With Beads sells recycled fashion gifts from bags, pencil cases, cushions and jewellery. The item which I first spotted from this company was the Recycled Flat Cap Bag. It's a unique gift which any girl with an eco-conscious or vintage fashion sense is going to love. (www.girlwithbeads.co.uk)

My next pick was inspired by my Mum. For anyone who loves sewing I thought bundles of recycled and vintage fabrics was a lovely gift idea. Cupboard Love put together collections from their own crafting. Jane also sells other items, handmade keyrings, purses and cushions (folksy.com/shops/CUPBOARDLOVE)

Who remembers vinyl records and tapes? I know my collection is gathering dust in the loft. When the Musics Over make Home Accessories and Jewellery From Vintage Vinyl Records and Tapes. It was the notebooks that initially caught my eye but they also have clocks, cake stands, book ends, letter racks and jewellery (folksy.com/shops/WhenTheMusicsOver)

I chose the pink heart ring because it's adorable and colourful. However, the cherry on top was the discovery that Sesh handcraft jewellery and art from recycled skateboards. I think that definitely scores you brownie points for a unique gift. (etsy.com/uk/shop/SESHNOTSTIGMA)

Do you know anyone who needs a case for their ipad? Not only is the elephant design adorable but these are produced from recycled cement bags. Better still they are produced as part of an ethical fair-trade project in Asia. (notonthehighstreet.com/recyclerecycle)

Lastly, I could not resist the cute children’s hats. They are made from reclaimed wool clothing. (notonthehighstreet.com/greentulip)

Natural Beauty Blogger Holy Grail Products No 9 - Good For Me, Good For You

I've had the pleasure of meeting Hephzibah on two occasions. I think it's fair to say we share a love of veggie friendly marshmallows. I regularly read her blog (Good for Me, Good for You) and I am excited to see she has ventured onto YouTube. Hephzibah agreed to take part in my Holy Grail blog series and she has shared with me her favourite products.  Keep reading to see what she has to say about the three items pictured above (two of which happen to be my favourites).

Bodhi Desert Rose Revitalising Facial Oil: This is perfection in a bottle. It might seem like an overstatement, but the silky feel as it goes onto your skin, the beautiful scent... and the smooth happy skin it leaves behind make this one of my top products. I am onto my second bottle and have no doubt that I will invest in a third. I say invest because it is £38 for 15ml, which is at the higher end of my pound pain threshold, but it is so worth it. Okay, off my soapbox now... and onto probably my ultimate HG item.

Akamuti Organic Rosewater/Orange Blossom Water: It's not a fancy item but it's one that I can't live without. I have repurchased these floral waters multiple times and currently have a glass bottle graveyard collection on my windowsill. I was thrilled to see that they've brought the rosewater out now in a mega size, although this one is in a PET plastic bottle rather than the pretty glass. I'm currently testing out a different toner/water and it's working okay, but I'm still longing to have this back in my collection as it's perfect for refreshing during the day, clearing the last traces of oil or balm cleansers, waking up the face in the morning and a multitude of other things. I probably should try to limit the amount I use as I do get through it relatively quickly - but at only £12 for the 200ml bottle, I'm not worrying about it.

Antipodes Rejoice Day Moisturiser: This is probably the only true moisturiser I have in my collection. I have a lot of serums and oils but this is the only traditional cream I use. I found it and stuck with it because it works: it doesn't seem to irritate my clogged pores, it sinks in well and it smells delicious. I ran out of this recently when a tube went walkies and I really missed it when it wasn't there - my skin routine doesn't feel complete without it and I was loathed to put anything else on my face. There may be a time when I find a moisturiser that works even better on my dry patches, but for now, this is the one for me.

Sugarpuffish Natural & Organic Skincare Christmas Gift Ideas 2014

This year I think there are lots of options for natural & organic gifts. Every time I went to publish this post, I was discovering something else but I can't possibly feature it all. I love gifting natural and organic skincare for Christmas. It’s my cheeky way of trying to get friends and family to switch out from mainstream routines. I have favourite brands who offer some beautiful gift sets.

Bloom Remedies– an extensive range of gift sets for men and women. New additions include bath melts in fragrances to complement the Cornish Sea Salt scrubs. Also a gardeners hands gift set which includes the new lemon & lavender handwash (£10/£18) bloomremedies.co.uk

Pure Thoughts– a personal favourite of mine, I love Pure Thoughts soaps and recommend considering the Merry Christmas Soap Duo and Men Soap Duo. (£8.95) purethoughts.co.uk

The Rose Tree– I was drawn to the Best Sellers Collection (Try Me Sizes) as a nice way to introduce someone to the brand. I have reviewed and like the Carrot & Mango cleansing balm which is included in this set (£21) therosetree.co.uk

LJ’s Natural– I have selected the relax gift set which I think would be perfect for those who get stressed out at Christmas time. It contains Rose Geranium & Lavender body lotion, muscle relax organic oil and Sleep Soundly roller remedy, each products is wrapped in tissue paper and presented in an organza bag (£23.95) lj-natural.com

Lyonsleaf– if you know someone prone to eczema then I’d suggest treating them to Lyonsleaf Soothing Calendula gift set which includes my personal favourite calendula cream and the new goat milk, manuka and calendula soap (£17.99) lyonsleaf.co.uk

Niki’s Balms – If you know someone who loves balm, then a gift set from Niki’s Balms is the perfect way to try four best sellers. It includes Rose Balm, Original Balm, Warming Balm and Lavender & Chamomile Balm, presented in an organic cotton bag (£19.99) nikisbalms.co.uk

Spiezia - a selection of gift ideas are available on Spiezia's website but I particularly like the mini sets. Choose from Handbag Essentials, Ladies Night, The Male Box, Sole Reviver and Soft Touch (£10.95) spieziaorganics.com

Willow Organic Beauty– a lovely selection of gifts for every budget but I was drawn to limited edition Christmas Tree Bauble with lip balm or Glowing Body Oil (£1 from every oil sold will be donated to the Butterfly Conservation) willowbeautyproducts.co.uk (£17/£19)

IW Natural Candle Co– for anyone who loves candles, it’s nice to encourage them to switch to eco-friendly ones. IWNC have a selection with festive fragrances, like cinnamon & vanilla, festive spice and mulled wine (£4.99 - £16) iwnaturalcandles.co.uk

Also, I shall point you in the direction of my advertisers (Vanessa’s Choice, TEWC, Cos Natural and Sophia’s Choice, links in side bar) these are great places to buy natural and organic products.

Can we claim a skincare product to be chemical free?

$

I find natural and organic skincare fascinating, a never ending journey of discovery and education. In my eyes, mainstream beauty (the stuff normally found in Boots/Superdrug) was never this exciting. Bloggers and brands show great passion in their aim of living a "greener" lifestyle. I am always learning and my opinions are forever changing and evolving. When I first started trawling the internet looking at ingredients and natural skincare, I noticed it was popular to advertise products as "chemical free or non toxic". It was (and still is) a blanket term referring to cutting out SLS, parabens, petrochemicals and similar ingredients that raise concerns. I always felt that unless you are following a holistic lifestyle this phrase probably means very little. It requires you to have an understanding of certain ingredients.

I recently questioned Human & Kind (on Twitter) on their use of the term "chemical free". You can see the conversation we had below.

Can we claim a skincare product to be chemical free?

I appreciate the limitations of twitter and 140 characters is restrictive but Human & Kind also use the term on their website (it's right there on their home page). Of course, they are not the only ones doing this but for the purpose of this post they drew the short straw as my example. I'm sure that will come back to haunt me. I could spend all day picking apart their ingredients. Yes, products do contain ingredients of natural origins, like aloe vera or shea butter but can you really claim "chemical free" when I spy ingredients like Butylphenyl methylpropional (a synthetic liquid with a floral aroma) or Parfum? Lets not forget water is a chemical.

I am aware that the environment around us and our bodies are made up of chemicals. Ingredients that are derived from natural sources can often go through laboratory processes. One example is Cocamidopropyl betaine which is derived from coconut but classed as a synthetic surfactant.

As for “toxic free or non toxic”, Alex from Skinsmatter.com, made an interesting point in a recent article (link), “What too many appear to forget or ignore is that toxicity is not a characteristic of a chemical, but of a chemical at a specific dose.” That sentence pretty much sums up why I think marketing non toxic is a grey area. Even natural ingredients can pose health risks, not all mushrooms are safe to eat and sunlight can cause cancer.

I would like to see companies drop the tag lines "chemical free and non toxic". I would rather we turn our attentions to ingredients that matter, the ones that benefit our skin and are better for the environment. I am perfectly happy for companies to mention that products are free from synthetic ingredients and identify which ones they avoid. You'll often see me referring to "undesirable ingredients" not sure if that works for marketing but I am comfortable it is suitable for blog posts.

Can we claim a skincare product to be chemical free? For me the answer is no. I will leave you with this food for thought.

Gaia Creams Coconut Mousse - 2 in 1 Make Up Remover & Moisturiser

Gaia Creams Coconut Mousse - 2 in 1 Make Up Remover & Moisturiser
I first discovered Gaia Creams back in 2011. Time flies when you are blogging and I recently decided to revisit the brand. Gaia Creams stands out from other brands I use because the ingredients are raw, 100% organic, ethical and vegan. This is a company that cares greatly about the environment and the impact of ingredients on our skin. I decided to buy the Coconut Mousse which is a 2 in 1 makeup remover and moisturiser. The attraction to this product, aside from ingredients, is the fact that it is customisable for skin type. I selected the one for sensitive skin which includes almond oil and calendula.

My first observation on receiving the Coconut Mousse was it is more like a soft light balm than a mousse. In my mind the word “mousse” conjures up a whipped and airy texture. I probably was also expecting something similar to a Herbfarmacy cleanser I tried a while back. Despite this, the cleanser is easy to use, it is extremely soft. You just need to scoop a pea size amount from the jar, massage across dry skin and remove with a cloth. The balm melts into oil with the warmth of skin.

Gaia Creams Coconut Mousse - 2 in 1 Make Up Remover & Moisturiser

I know not everyone is a fan of coconut because some people consider it comedogenic . I do not appear to experience this problem. The issue that is apparent with this ingredient is it will turn to liquid in warm temperatures. Currently in my home it remains a balm but when I travelled with this, it melted. No major issue, you can use as oil (although messy from the jar) or refrigerate to solidify. My regret is I forgot this and ended up with cleanser across the sink, toilet and bathroom floor (sorry Mum!). The result was my brand new jar ended up half empty. A rookie error but one I feel is worth mentioning.

Overall, Gaia Creams 2 in 1 Coconut Mousse is a nice product. The use of raw ingredients and their environmental ethics gives them a unique selling point over other brands. In terms of performance I would suggest Coconut Mousse is on a par with Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm, although different ingredients it shares the multipurpose aspect.

Have you tried products from Gaia Creams? Do you have a favourite?

Balmology Discovery Set
Exactly three years ago I published a review of Balmology Comfort Balm (click here). I have been in love with this balm ever since and it is always top of my recommendation list. I was thrilled that Balmology agreed to provide a sample for the Green Beauty meet up we had in October. We received The Discovery Set, a fabulous way to trial the range and it is NOW available for purchase on their website (balmology.co.uk). The set includes Neroli & Sweet Basil Cleansing Balm, Neroli & Frankincense Beauty balm and Calendula & Chamomile Comfort balm (3 x 12g).  I think everyone needs to add the set to their Christmas Wishlist or perhaps buy for a loved one.

Samples - Living Nature, Pulpe De Vie, TEWC, Madara, Herbfarmacy

In the goody bag from the October Meet Up (post link), I received several sachet samples which I have been working my way through. Of course, I will only provide first impressions of these products since most sachets only contain enough product for a couple of applications.

Herbfarmacy Just Face Cream & Wash Off Cleansing Mousse(website link)
The Just Face Cream, is fragrance free so that sparked my interest. I would consider buying the full size but I hesitate because it contains Phenoxyethanol. Not an ingredient I avoid entirely but one I use with caution. I had previously reviewed the cleansing mousse back in 2012 and I wasn't impressed. With continued use, I did not feel it was appropriate for my skin type but it's fine for a one off (review link)

Living Nature Extra Hydrating toning gel, Nourishing Day Cream & Firming Flax Serum(provided by Botanical Brands)
I think the sample packaging is great, the snap opening makes for easy application and you can squeeze every last drop of product out. All three products were pleasant to use but the one that stood out for me was the Nourishing Day cream. It felt rich without being overly heavy. I would consider buying a full size but the price is the sticking point for me 50ml = £31 which is more than I would normally spend.

Pulpe De Vie LOVE ME TONIGHT Anti-ageing Night Cream, Pulpe De Vie COZY CUDDLE Radiant Face Cream, SWEET FRAPPE Mask and Face Scrub & LUSCIOUS GLOW Pearly Body Milk (provided by Botanical Brands)
Pulpe De Vie is a fun and fruity brand. The scents are delightful but slightly overpowering for my own personal taste. That being said I did enjoy using up the samples as the creams felt pleasant on my skin (I passed along the body milk to my sister). The mask & face scrub is a novel product to use. A three step process - apply to dry skin and leave 5 minutes, massage gently to cleanse and exfoliate, then add water to turn the mask into a milk which can be washed away. Would I buy full sizes? I am undecided, packaging and scents made me feel these products could be more suited to teens/young adults.

Madara Anti-Ageing Day Cream, Anti-Ageing Night Cream & Deep Moisture Cream (provided by www.mypure.co.uk)
The sample collection covered different skin types so I selected the ones appropriate to me and passed on the rest. I am not new to the brand and have bought Madra products in the past. The one issue I have with this brand is the scent, it’s strong and a little unusual. The creams were nice to use but the only one that stood out for me was the Deep Moisture Cream. I would consider buying a full size bottle. Madara is a good brand for those who are Vegan and I noticed the claim (on their website) that products are nut free.

TEWC Grapefruit Facial Exfoliator(provided by Vanessa's Choice)
This exfoliator contains fine scrub particles but they are still a little too abrasive for my sensitive skin. As this product is a balm consistency, it is heavy with oil which does leave a greasy residue. I disliked this sensation on my skin and found it difficult to remove. I would be more inclined to use this on my body rather than my face.

Review - TOTM 100% organic cotton sanitary products

TOTM 100% organic cotton sanitary products

Back in October I introduced readers to TOTM (Time of the Month) organic cotton sanitary pads (click here). As promised, I am back with a review. I received two TOTM Ultra Thin Day Pads and two Ultra Thin Night pads (both products have wings). For a point of reference, the products I normally use are Bodyform (Ultra Long Wings) and Always Night.

I have to be totally honest, TOTM pads did not score well on performance but it’s probably due to the fact that I experience heavy periods. I ended up using the night pad during the day as I preferred the extra length it provided. As I sat down to write this review, I studied every inch of the pad. I came to the conclusion that Bodyform is offering me marginally better protection (it’s not perfect and has failed me on occasions). They claim “anti-leak barriers” and “absorbent where you need it most”. It’s not until I look closer that I noticed the lines and shapes in the design do serve a purpose. I feel like I should get out blue water and demo the difference on camera but I will refrain.

TOTM 100% organic cotton sanitary products

TOTM pads are soft to the touch and similar in thickness (or should that be thinness? lol) to mainstream brands. The pad has a ridge design and not a completely flat surface. Whilst using the pad I noted that the adhesive was sufficient to keep it in place, an important factor for me since I have used other organic brands which have let me down.

In principal, I would happily ditch mainstream for TOTM. I appreciate the differences. They are better for the environment and my body because they lack "harsh" ingredients (chlorine, perfumes, dioxin) found in mainstream brands. I have previously, tried Natracare and I would recommend TOTM over those.

Although my experience was not perfect, I would still encourage switching over to TOTM, even more so if you prefer using tampons. You will pay extra for organic sanitary products, for comparison TOTM cost £3.10 (8 pads in box) and Bodyform Ultra Long £1.79 (12 pads in packet). I am sure we can agree that we cannot put a price on the environment and our health.

Ingredient Review - Simple Skincare

$
0
0

I have re-written this blog post what feels like a million times. Sometimes it can be difficult to put into words my passions about ingredients. I do like to present facts and encourage readers to question companies. It can be hard to stand up against big brands and then (as I know from experience) have to deal with people who become upset by your opinions. Readers have accused me of damaging businesses, of picking on some companies and not others. Let’s just set the record straight, I very much doubt that one person’s opinion can “bring down” a multinational corporation. I am a little fish in a big ocean when it comes to my weight as a blogger. As much as I would love to critic many other brands, I don’t have the time to write about them all so yes I do select brands that I see as popular and currently on trend.

I think it’s very naive that some people believe companies have the wellbeing of their consumers at heart and that everyone is decent when it comes to company ethics – think about cigarette causing cancer and leaking breast implants, we have whistleblowers to thank for giving consumers knowledge. I certainly would never regard myself as a whistleblower but the purpose of blog posts like this is to basically say “hey, dear readers, you have a choice, don’t always believe the marketing hype, listen to your skin and spend your money wisely”. Remember, I am also trying to share my experience dealing with allergies and eczema. I have spent many years trying to figure out why I have skin problems. Is it genetics or is it the environment around us, the food I eat, place where I live or the products I put on my skin? I also want to help protect the Earth for future generations, what goes into for example my body wash, ends up down the drain and into our water and soil.

So moving on from this little speech, Simple Skincare has been around for years and I tried their products in my teens and promptly reacted to them. Recently Simple have been working with bloggers so they came to the forefront of my mind once again. When I saw this sentence in a review - "With Simple I never feel like I'm putting nasty chemicals on my skin" - I felt the need to express my opinions.  I have never been comfortable with the brand and their image for being “sensitive skincare experts”. I am upset by the bold as brass wording “skin loving ingredients, no harsh chemicals”. Why? Because I believe it is misleading. Their formulations make me feel uncomfortable. In order to support my argument, I decided to take a closer look at the product line.

Simple’s tag line appears to be based on products being free from artificial perfume, colours and no harsh chemicals. For some people being free from perfume and colours is a positive selling point, there will of course be consumers who have sensitivity to these ingredients, me included. However, I have a wide range of irritation triggers so Simple does not meet my needs. You could argue, it is impossible to cater to everyone and I do not disagree on that point. However, I wrote a blog post the other week (click here) and explained why the phrase “no harsh chemicals” does not sit comfortably with me. What do Simple class as a harsh chemical? From where I am standing, their products are loaded with synthetic ingredients which I believe may cause irritation and could be classed as harsh on skin.

I looked at ingredient lists across Simple’s product line and I can demonstrate why I believe the phrase "no harsh chemicals" is a bit cheeky. I spotted 2-Bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol a antimicrobial preservative that works by forming formaldehyde in cosmetic products. Straight off that sends shivers down my spine. Formaldehyde is a proven toxin so I would class this as a “harsh chemical”. The majority of Simple products contain parabens and BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene), used for preserving and both regarded as a toxin and allergen. The face wash contains SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulphate) and Cocamidopropyl betaine, synthetic surfactants associated with irritation and allergic contact dermatitis. I noticed Dimethicone in the facial creams, a silicone based polymer which I avoid because I believe it has the potential to irritate delicate skin. Now you could argue that the average person probably won’t feel any ill effects from these ingredients, however, I think there is strong evidence to show a risk for those who are prone to sensitivity, the exact consumer these products appear to be formulated and marketed towards.

I noticed on the front of each bottle that Simple give you the number of “skin loving” ingredients, for example, four in the Night Cream (glycerine, bisabolol, allantoin, borage oil). That equates to 20% of the product containing ingredients which Simple are happy to market as “skin loving” but what about the other 80%? I can never understand why any consumer would be comfortable with this ratio. The natural and organic skincare I choose probably contain 90% to 100% natural ingredients (as in recognisable from plants and pronounceable). I accept that not every natural plant extract is suitable for the entire population but my positive experiences outweigh all the negative ones from ranges available on the High Street.

Bottom line is Simple Skincare is not for me. Of course, you have the right to decided what to put on your skin but I would like to encourage readers to do their homework. Be aware that even a product that claims to be suitable for sensitive skin may have the potential to irritate.

Mad Cucumber Vegan Lounge, Bournemouth

The other week I had some vacation time and took a trip to Bournemouth. The aim of this little adventure was to seek out a Vegan meal at one of several restaurants/cafes which I have been hearing so much about on Twitter (@Dorset_vegan is the one to follow). It was a toss up between Zoukinis or Mad Cucumber with Zoukinis being the loser since it is closed on Mondays.

Excuse the fuzzy ipod pictures but I forgot my camera and it was a grey and wet Monday. Mad Cucumber is a reasonable sized, light and spacious cafe, with homely furnishings. Staff were friendly and the menu presented on chalkboards on the wall behind the counter. After I distracted myself from eyeing up the cakes on display, we ordered enchiladas.

My boyfriend and I both enjoyed our meal. The enchilada was full of veggies, beans, "cheese" and the accompanying side salads were delicious. When dining out dessert is usually not an option for me so I could not resist ordering a slice of Peanut Butter bar. It reminded me of PB cups and went down a treat. I did ended up sharing it with my other half because it was rather rich and indulgent.

If you find yourself hungry in Bournemouth and you like simple, homely vegan food in a relaxed environment, then I recommend a visit to Mad Cucumber. I liked it and I would happily return for another meal and a slice of cake.

Sugarpuffish Skincare Routine Cleanser & Toner

When it comes to my facial skincare, I stick to the motto cleanser, tone and moisturise. I try and resist having too many products on the go at once because my skin just does not cope with constant change. I tend to only switch products when existing ones have run out. I thought I would give you a sneak peek into my bathroom and show you the products I am currently using.

I rotate my cleansers depending on mood and how my skin is behaving. You will spy the Odylique Silk Touch Cleanser in my next empties video as it ran out this morning. I like the formulation, it starts as a gel and when you add water it transforms to milk. Sadly, the scent is not to my personal taste so I would not repurchase. I have already written a review for Gaia Cream 2-1 Coconut Mousse Cleanser (click here). I like this soft buttery balm and it works well for my skin.

Not everyone sees the value of toners and I always feel like they are missing out on this important step. For me toners help refresh, soothe, cleanse and balance my skin. I opt for ingredients which help with sensitivity so I have had Nourish Soothing Toning Mist and Balm Balm Chamomile Floral Mist in rotation for several months. I highly recommend both and have repurchased several times.

Sugarpuffish Skincare Routine Moisturisers & Facial oil, serums

I am fickle with moisturisers. I have firm favourites which I go back to time and time again, like Pai Chamomile & Rosehip Calming Day Cream but I also like switching things up. I was gifted Benecos Day Cream* and Herbfarmacy Pure Hydration Serum* in a goody bag. As a standalone product, Benecos cream certainly offers value for money but at this time of year it’s not rich enough for my skin. In order to boost the product, I have been applying the Herbfarmacy Serum underneath. It’s a nice combination which appears to be working well for me. During the winter I am prone to small patches of eczema around my eyes and on my chin. In these situations Balmology Comfort Balm* is currently my go to product.

For the evening I like to switch from cream to oil, especially in the colder weather as I feel my skin needs some extra TLC. My much loved Odylique Superfruit came to an end so I am currently using up what I had in my stash. Depending on my mood, I’m alternating between The Rose Tree Radiance Facial Essence Rose & Marula* and Bodhi & Birch Desert Rose Facial Oil*.

So there you have it folks, a quick look into the products I am currently using. It goes without saying that since I’m a beauty addict, my products are always changing. Have you tried any of the beauty items I have mentioned here? I’ll be looking to replace the Odylique cleanser now it’s finished. Do you have a cleanser recommendation?
