Terre Verdi Rejuvenating Facial Serum

Terre Verdi Rejuvenating Facial Serum
I first spotted Terre Verdi on Twitter as they recently entered the Free From Skincare Awards 2015. Alessandra is the founder of Terri Verdi, she turned her love of home grown skincare into a business and her native Sicily is the inspiration for the products. The range uses natural ingredients and consists of face and body products.

I was given the opportunity to sample the Rejuvenating Facial Serum*, a blend of almond oil, apricot kernel oil, lavender, frankincense, Vitamin E and rosemary. The ingredients are a good mix making this product suitable for all skin types. Lavender and Frankincense are known for their anti inflammatory and anti bacterial properties along with their calming sedative fragrance. Almond oil is a good emollient and apricot is recommended for sensitive, mature and dry skin types.

I would describe the Rejuvenating Facial Serum as lightweight which my dry skin easily absorbs. The scent is pungent with lavender being the dominate note for my sense of smell. I must admit I have to be in the right mood to use this serum. I do favour products with lighter scents.

I commend Terre Verdi for having full ingredients listed on the website. My only minor criticism, which I have been told is due to be corrected, is lack of essential oils allergens on the bottle label. I also spotted the wording “free from parabens, chemicals, fragrances, colourings” and I would encourage any company to stop using “chemicals” in their marketing. I have already written a blog post on this topic, click here to read why I believe companies should not claim their products to be “chemical free”.

Overall, Terre Verde Rejuvenating Facial Serum is a pleasant product which I think many would enjoy using and I recommend you have a browse of their website (click here).

Introduction - Itha (+ Giveaway)

Itha Organic Lip Glow
I recently discovered Itha and they made a great first impression so I asked Kelly (the founder) if she would like to introduce herself and products to my readers.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how Itha began?
A few years ago, Itha’s founder Kelly from South London decided to make a career change from the fashion industry to beauty & cosmetics. She embarked on a series of training courses and now plans to create a range of organic and natural cosmetic products, starting with tinted lip colour and lip care.

Kelly has been a vegetarian for over 10 years and has always been interested in a natural organic life style. She suffered from chapped lips in winter, and found it hard to wear various chemical based lip balms, or lip colour due to the dry condition of the lips. After a long period of preparation and planning which involved help from a lot of creative people, countless trial and errors, and feedback from friends / families, Itha’s first organic lip collection was born.

So far, Itha has launched 5 organic lip glows and lip care in the UK, all vegetarian friendly. The organic lip glow offers moisturising benefits and a subtle sheer colour that is the perfect balance of lip balm and lip colour. The philosophy behind the London based brand is understanding all of the ingredients behind the products and formulating them with the purest and finest organics to achieve an effective result.

Itha is an interesting brand name, can you explain if there is a story behind choosing the name, does it have a special meaning to it?
When Kelly was considering a career change, she went travelling and visited a delightful vineyard in Ithaca, New York. The landscape was picturesque, green, and inspiring and it was here that she made the decision to create a line of organic, green beauty products. On returning to London it was decided that a name with a subtle reference to that place should be created, so she decided to call the brand itha.

Why are natural/organic cosmetics important to you?
Skin is the largest organ of the body and it is important that we take good care of it. Natural / organic cosmetic products are not only good for you, but also minimize the chance of getting irritation on the skin.

What do you find most challenging when formulating products?
100% Concentration and dedication. When formulating and testing new products, it can be a very long process, and needs a lot of attention. On a typical day like this, I will switch off my phone and try not to be interrupted by the outside world until the work is ready to move on to the next stage.

What have been the highs and/or lows of establishing Itha?
Highs- when you see your initial thoughts transition from a piece of paper into a finished product and then being passed to customers, not to mention their happy reactions, it makes all the hard work totally worth it! Lows- when testing new products or formulas, things can always be tricky as you are looking for flaws within these products and need to find ways to overcome it. Sometimes when there are no better solutions you know you have to drop it and move on. It can be a bit frustrating at times.

It's great to see your products are cruelty free and Vegetarian friendly however many of my readers are Vegan, may I ask if in the future you might look to formulate some products suitable for Vegan customers?
There is a plan for expanding the organic range, and my initial thoughts will be to produce vegan lip products but everything is still at an early stage. Like other Itha products, the new vegan range will still be organic and 100% natural. We will post updates on our social medial sites, and hopefully release a vegan line in the not too distant future.

What does the future hold for Itha?
Itha has been accepted as an entrant for the Free from skincare awards 2015, and is going to exhibit in this year’s Love natural love organic show in Olympia London in 3-5 July. All products are handmade in London and currently available online. We are working on having the Itha products available through more beauty retailers / boutiques and reach out to more people who are in pursuit of natural beauty. The brand is new, fresh, and lively, and we are happy to engage with our customers / online followers / bloggers, and receive their ideas and feedback. From time to time, there will also be product giveaways via our social media and website!

Do you have any skincare/makeup tips to share with readers?
Beauty comes from within, and your face mirrors your body and health. A healthy lifestyle is the key to maintaining a beautiful appearance. Having a balanced diet and exercising regularly are just as important as having a good skincare routine. When your body sweats, your body detoxes which helps to make your skin glow.

Opt for tinted lip products rather than lipstick in winter to help reduce the dry lip conditions. When removing lip colour, use balm / oil based cleansing and gently massage it to remove any remaining colour. Avoid using makeup removing wipes, or any harsh rubbing on the lips as it might cause them to wrinkle. Keeping your lips moisturised and hydrated all through the year will make you look young and fresh, it looks a million times better than having chapped lips with colour on. My best tip however for beautiful looking lips would be to stay healthy, and use good quality lip products together with a smile.

Vegan Creme Egg Crackdown.....It's no yoke!

Vegan Dairy Free Creme Egg

I have tried a Cadbury creme egg, not the wisest of decisions I ever made but I was a desperate fool in my youth. Thanks to the increased popularity of vegan food a whole new world of dairy free treats have become available to me. Every Easter I am making up for lost time by treating myself to a dairy free egg and now I can add dairy free/vegan creme eggs to my shopping list.

I bought my first creme egg from Vegan Tuck Box. The fondant was sweet with a good consistency but the chocolate was a little on the dark and bitter side for my personal taste. The second egg came from Consider It. I am already a fan of their truffle bars having bought from them a couple of times. For me the chocolate on their egg was better quality and a softer taste. The fondant also had a good consistency and a nicer taste than the first egg.

In the Vegan creme egg crackdown it’s definitely no yoke Consider It is egg-cellent :D

Sugarpuffish Empties March 2015

I had spent the afternoon recording a video but I've had technical difficulties with the sound being out of sync. It's very frustrating so I am now here writing this post instead. I did not have many products in the empty basket this month.

Bespoke Aroma Soothing Bath Tea* (review link) - a tea bag for the bath tub is an interesting product idea which I enjoyed using. These would make great gifts or treats for yourself.

Pai Chamomile & Rosehip Moisturiser - I've bought this many times as it's a firm favourite and I have already replaced this bottle. Chamomile and Rosehip are ingredients that work well for my skin type so it's no surprise to me that I like this moisturiser

Handmade Natural Cleansing Oil (review link) - one of my all time favourite brands and I love this cleansing oil. The ingredients stand out as being a little different to other oils. I will buy again in the future, this was my third or fourth bottle.

Lyonsleaf Body Butter & Calendula Cream* (review link) - these jars are not quite empty but they are past their best before dates (Sept & Oct 2014). I liked both butters but did favour the calendula because it's an ingredient I love. It does sadden me that I couldn't reach the bottom as I hate to waste product. I will repurchase the small jar in the future.

Pure Nuff Stuff Arch Angel Foot Soak (review link) - I like to pamper my feet and enjoyed using this soak. Affordable and fun packaging was a key factor to recommending these bath shots.

Fresh Therapies Nourishing Nail Elixir

Aside from using hand cream I don’t have a specific routine dedicated to my hands and nails so it was curiosity that prompted me to accept a sample of Fresh Therapies Nourishing Nail Elixir*.

The ingredients for this nail elixir are: jojoba (quickly absorbed and similar to our own sebum), apricot (protecting and soothing, suitable for sensitive, mature and dry skin), neroli, frankincense and rosemary (all have antibacterial, anti inflammatory and antifungal properties as well as providing rich aroma).

I have the bottle sitting on my living room table and found myself reaching for it in the evenings while watching TV. The pipette allows for easy application, I can either drop the oil onto my nails or run the dropper around my nails. I then take time to massage each finger. I don’t have any major nail issues but I do suffer from dry skin so I have seen the benefits from using the nail elixir. My skin is looking better around the edges of my nails. There is an improvement in the condition, less dryness and flaking.

I think this is a lovely product for anyone who enjoys a manicure routine and I am happy to recommend.

Eco Friendly Wet Wipes - Make Up, Intimate & Baby Wipes

Organyc Wet Wipes
I recently wrote a Guest Post about Baby skincare (click here) so wet wipes have been on my mind. I would suggest any type of wet wipes (baby, intimate or facial) should be used with caution if you have sensitive skin. Many brands have ingredients linked to contact dermatitis (e.g. methylchloroisothiazolinone) but they are also bad for the environment. Last week I read an article which stated "The number of wet wipes washing up on beaches in the UK increased by more than 50% last year, say conservationists, who have urged people to stop flushing them down their toilets."theguardian.com

I know wet wipes serve a purpose on occasions but when using for makeup removal please don't rely on them for 100% of your cleansing routine. You should follow up with a traditional cleanser to remove deep down dirt and grime. Personally, I never use for cleansing but I carry a packet when travelling as they can get you out of a sticky finger emergency when you can't reach a bathroom.

I've listed below brands that tick the boxes with ingredients and eco-friendliness (biodegradable/flushable).

Beaming Baby - Organic, Fragrance Free & Facial Wipes
Cheeky Wipes - reusable Baby wipes
Clearly Herbal - Baby wipes
Faith in Nature - Makeup wipes
Jackson Reece - Baby wipes
Natracare - Intimate, Baby & Makeup Wipes
Organyc - Intimate & Baby wipes
Water Wipes

Many of the baby wipes mentioned above are available in shops (supermakets /high street). If you have a rummage in my blog Archives, I have previously reviewed Blum Naturals Towelettes, Superdrug Feminine Wipes, Faith In Nature & Natracare Intimate wipes.

Let me know if you have a favourite brand of natural and organic wipes.

Review: Bare Natural Soaps - Olive Oil Soap

Review Bare Natural Soaps Olive Oil Soap

I have rekindled my love of solid soaps while writing this blog and I have been lucky enough to sample from a variety of brands, Bare Natural Soaps* has now joined that list. I have been using the Olive Oil Soap which I chose because it is free from essential oils and contains two oils - 70% Olive Oil and 30% Coconut Oil. Bare soaps are supplied in fabric bags which are handmade by Dinah (the founder). This attention to detail goes a long way and I thought it was a delightful touch.

The soap is a nice size for hand washing, it might sound silly but it’s a solid soap. I mention this because I have tested others that turn to mush at the first sight of water. This soap has longevity and is still going strong after three or four weeks in my bathroom. It produces a nice creamy lather and does not feel drying on the skin. The ingredients are simple which suits my skin type so I can’t fault how it performs.

I am happy to recommend Bare Natural Soaps. Make sure you check out their website because along side several great sounding fragrances of soap (peppermint & sea salt, basil, coffee etc), they also have bath bombs and bath salts.

Review Greenfrog Botanic Body & Hand Washes

I have previously mentioned Greenfrog on my blog. Back in 2013 I reviewed samples of their cleaning products and soapnuts. The brand has undergone a makeover and the cleaning products are currently being reformulated. In the meantime, Greenfrog have launched body and hand washes. The range is formulated from certified organic soapberries (Sapindus Mukorrossi) with essential oil blends (Peppermint & Geranium and Neroli & Lime) that have been considered for different effects on skin and mood.

I have found both products a pleasure to use. They are low foaming but that is a trait to be expected from using soapberries. Whilst Greenfrog does not use SLS/SLES or ALS the surfactants are cocamidopropyl betaine, potassium cocoate, lauryl betaine and coco-glucoside. These are synthetic ingredients derived from coconut oil and sugar beets. The preservative system is levulinic acid and potassium sorbate. Whilst you may not get an overload of bubbles, the Peppermint and Geranium combination is a pleasure on my senses, something unique when comparing to similar products in my collection. It’s a floral delight with a minty kick.

Greenfrog should be commended for their ethos. Products are Vegetarian/Vegan, biodegradable and free from palm oil, petrochemicals, sulphates and parabens. According to their website they are working towards obtaining the Leaping Bunny trademark. Both the handwash and bodywash certainly do the job they are intended for so I am more than happy to recommend them.

Have you tried Greenfrog products? What did you think of them?

New to Me Free From Products - Nakd, Choc Shot, Tesco Cones, Go Nuts!

Free From Product Nakd, Choc Shot, Tesco Cones, Go Nuts!

It's been a good few weeks in the Sugarpuffish household, discovering new to me free from foods has been very exciting and I have been tracking them down.

I often make little snack bites at home but a while back I spotted Go Nuts!* on Not On The High Street website. Go Nuts! are available in four flavours and are free from dairy, gluten, refined sugars, preservatives, additives and GMOs. A nice treat for yourself or a present for someone who enjoys a healthy lifestyle.

The original Choc Shot has been a staple in my kitchen cupboard since I discovered it but I had to track down the new Coconut version. I believe it's currently exclusive to Holland & Barrett and oh boy! it's fantastic. I love coconut so this is a match made in heaven.

The Tesco Free From Strawberry & Vanilla Cones (dairy free & gluten free, Vegan) have been the talk of twitter but every time I tried to buy them they were out of stock. I got lucky the other weekend and snapped up the last box. I was hesitant at first because I think Tesco Vanilla dairy free ice cream (in the tub) is pretty horrid but the strawberry in the cones is what makes these work for me. Tastes like strawberry milkshake.

I've been addicted to the Nakd Cocoa Delight bars for years so imagine my excitement when I spotted these Nakd Fruit & Nut Nibbles in Sweet Shop flavours. I ordered myself a box from their website but I also spotted some flavours available in Sainsbury's. So far Coconut and Toffee are my top favourites.

Let me know if you have tried any of these Free From foods or have you now added them to your shopping list.

New products discovered at Natural & Organic Products Europe 2015

natural and organic skincare discovered at Natural & Organic Products Europe 2015
On Sunday I was able to attend the Natural & Organic Products Europe Event thanks to Viridian. It’s a trade only show which covers everything from skincare, wellbeing and food. This was my idea of heaven and in keeping with my blog theme so it was worth the trip up to Excel, London. I was also able to spend the day with fellow Green Bloggers Amber and Ailish.

This was an event where I was able to meet brands I have spoken with on Twitter and say hello to old friends. It was nice to say in person, that I genuinely loved products and how could I, as a customer (and of course blogger) get them into local stores so I can buy more of them. I love online shopping but it would be even better if I was supporting the trade on my local high street.

There was so much to see and at times it became crowded and I know I miss people off my long list. I’m hoping some of them will be exhibiting at the Allergy/LNLO shows in July. So in no particular order, here are the brands that I wanted to share with readers, definitely keep your eye out for their products.

Skincare
Andalou Naturals - USA brand which gets lots of attention from bloggers across the pond. It can be a bit tricky to get hold of but there are a couple of online stockists which you can pick up in a quick Google search

Bathing Beauty have updated packaging which is giving one of my favourite brands a cool eco-friendly vibe. Makeup lovers will be excited to hear they have just launched a range of Vegan brushes.

Bath Spa Skincare a great looking skincare range with products tailored to several skin types including eczema. They have just launched Rejuvenating Powder Serum which I thought was one of the most innovative products I saw at the show.

Coco Cuddles by Jeeva UK - a Vegan skincare range for sensitive and eczema prone babies and children. The range looked interesting and one I will do more research on.

Carishea - a range of skincare that is fair-trade, ethical and sustainable

Scentered- a unique range of 100% natural portable therapy balms. Delightful scents and sleek packaging I think this brand is going to be a hit with many followers.

Siam Botanicals - Hand crafted in small batches in Bangkok and formulated with local oils including coconut, rice bran, guava and moringa. After being a long time twitter follower, I am excited for their launched into the UK and I look forward to seeing great things from them.

PHB Ethical - you may already be familiar with my review of this brand, I have been buying from their unscented range. Products are Vegan and they have a great ethical outlook

Zoya Goes Pretty - not to be confused with the popular nail polish brand, this is a simple range of organic & unrefined shea body butters with eye catching pretty packaging

skincare free from food at Natural & Organic Products Europe 2015

Foods
Ape Snacks- I was keen to sample after spotting these crispy coconut curls snacks on twitter, I enjoyed the sweet and savoury combination of flavours.

CocoNuts Vegan coconut ice cream, I sampled the chocolate, nice taste and strong coconut flavour.

Hampstead Tea - I’m a huge ice tea fan but I hate the sugary brands, these were refreshing and no weird after taste.

Jollyum– I’m already a massive fan of Jollyum and for me, their Double chocolate is the best dairy free chocolate ice cream on the market, it tastes perfect, first time I bought it I did a double take and check the ingredients label several times because I can’t believe it is dairy free.

Koko- if you avoid dairy you’ll probably be familiar with Koko coconut milks but as of this week their new spread (margarine) launches at Waitrose (Ocado to follow). I sampled, enjoyed the taste and I will be looking to buy if my local store is a stockist.

Nom Foods- I’m already a fan and follower of Nom Bars so I can’t ignore their presence at the show. I recommend you seek them out and encourage local stores to stock them.

Nothing But - an interesting looking range of freeze dried vegetable & fruit snacks

Soupologie - dairy free, gluten free and Vegan soups which I have previously spotted at Holland & Barrett but have yet to taste them.

Lastly Greenscents, I first reviewed their household cleaners in 2012 and I continue to buy from them. It was lovely to catch up in person. Greenscents have recently added to the range with Tinyscents Nursery Multi-surface spray (Vegan & Palm oil free).

I think that covers everything I was interested in. Has anything on my list tickled your interest?

Review: Botanicals Therapeutic Foot Soak

Botanicals Therapeutic Foot Soak Review

My new favourite way to relax is with foot soaks. It is a simple pleasure to take ten minutes of "me time". I have two ways of using a foot soak. I will add to a bowl of water and relax in front of the TV or I fill the bath with enough water to cover my feet, take a shower and enjoy the aroma from the steam (I have a shower over the bath rather than separate cubicle).

I have reviewed a few foot soaks over the years but recently I have been testing Botanicals Therapeutic Foot Soak*. Botanicals is an awarding winning brand which I know well from the Free From Skincare Awards. Products are certified organic with the Soil Association, suitable for Vegans and free from synthetic ingredients. This foot soak contains Himalayan rock crystal, Dead Sea salt and essential oils of spearmint, wild mint and tea tree. These are ingredients which sooth sore feet and the strong minty fragrance uplifts your senses. Botanicals have two other products in their footcare range that compliment the soak - revitalising foot scrub & foot softening balm. The trio of products are perfect for anyone who likes at home pedicures.

Botanicals Therapeutic Foot Soak

If you have never tried to re-create a spa treatment at home,  here are some Botanicals Pedicure Pointers - sprinkle Therapeutic Foot Soak into a bowl of warm water. Relax and unwind whilst soaking your feet for 10 minutes. Then pat dry. Follow by mixing a teaspoon of Revitalising Foot Scrub with a little warm water. Massage vigorously over your feet and rinse away with warm water. Pat feet dry. Finish by applying a pea sized amount of Foot Softening Balm onto each foot and massage until absorbed.

Botanicals Therapeutic Soak is a product which I am happy to recommend. With summer just around the corner it could be the perfect way to get your feet flip flop ready. If you are like me and stress about life 24/7 then I would suggest trying foot soaks for relaxation, many people believe reflexology to be a powerful complementary therapy.

Sugarpuffish Tried & Tested Recipes Vegan

Spring Green Rosti - a Waitrose recipe card, simple idea of frying up grated potato with spring greens. We skipped the tomatoes but added in some left over broccoli

Bionita Spinach Gnocchi (gluten free & vegan) - I'm cheating as this is not a recipe but I enjoyed this Gnocchi combined with a stir in pasta sauce and broccoli

5 Ingredient Peanut Butter Cup energy bites -  Delicious snack to keep in the fridge for when your sweet tooth gets a craving. I substituted peanut butter for Meridian almond butter.

Egg Free Meringues - When I found this recipe I was skeptical, how could chickpea water make meringues but the end result have been simply amazing. Combined with sliced peaches and Alpro soya cream and I have been living the dream!

Disappointing Product: Nourish Organic Body Wash Fresh Fig

Nourish Organic Body Wash Fresh Fig
It’s not very often that I write about disappointing products and the reason for that is not because I shy away from them, it has more to do with the fact that I take time over choosing products so they do not often let me down. Not to be confused with the UK brand of a similar name, Nourish Organic is from the USA and has a very impressive “pledge of purity” or as I would say “free from ethic”. According to the bottle sat in front of me, ingredients are free from parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, artificial fragrance or preservatives, silicones, propylene glycol, mineral oils, sulphates, synthetic dyes, triclosan, EDTA and aluminium.

I read reviews and added the Fresh Fig Body Wash to my Christmas Wish List and was excited to find it under the tree. Sadly, this product was a disappointment from the start. I dislike the fragrance. It is not offensive but there is something about it which does not suit me and with time it did not grow on me. My other criticism is I could not get a decent lather. I am used to low foaming products, I do not mind them but I expect a few bubbles. This did nothing and it may simple be due to the fact that I live in a hard water area. From past experience, I know that can affect performance, shampoos and body washes also seems to lather differently depending on your location. I certainly can not find fault in the ingredients list but I am sad to say that is as far as it goes for me.

Nourish Organics is not easy to obtain in the UK but you can buy from Amazon, iHerb or Vitacost. Have you tried any products in their range? What did you think of them?

Natural, Organic and Vegan Cleaners for the Home
I am often asked about products I use around my home. Reducing chemical cleaners has been a gradual process over the years, mainly because brands have either under performed or are difficult to obtain. If I can not find a suitable natural alternative then my top priority is switching to cruelty free. In this video I mention my favourite natural and organic brands. Click here to watch the video

Boujies Pink Pomelo Natural Wax Candle

Boujies Pink Pomelo Natural Wax Candle

When I looked back through my archives I realised a Boujies candle last featured on my blog in 2013. Boujies scents are inspired by nature, hand poured and blended in Britain from the finest fragrances and essential oils, which are mixed into 100% natural wax and diffusing oil. I may not burn candles very often but I do appreciate a luxury brand free from synthetic ingredients.

I was excited to receive Boujies new fragrance, Pink Pomelo*. This scent is a beautiful blend of yuzu, grapefruit, sweet lemon, jasmine blossom, elderflower and muguet, on a musky base of amber infused with a twist of white tea. For me, the notes which stand out are grapefruit and jasmine. It is a summery fragrance which is refreshing and a delightful scent to have in my home.

Free From Food Awards 2015 - Winners #FFFA15

The Winners & Runners Up have been announced for the Free From Food Awards 2015 and I was pleased to see some of my favourite brands on the lists.

I'm a huge supporter of Amy's Kitchen UK as they offer me safe ready meal options, being a non meat eater with allergies can be a little tricky but their Vegan options are perfect.

Many of the brands I enjoy eating were on commended lists - Jollyum, Pudology, Moo Free Chocolates, Booja-Booja, Ten Acre, Nakd Wholefoods, Clive's Pies

The awards are also a great way to find new products and I will now be on the look out for Karkli, Coconut Merchant (Coconut Chips & Coconut Jam!), Doisy & Dam, The Primal Pantry
